name: forge description: Plugin development lifecycle manager. Handles scaffolding, live dev symlinks, workspace/fixture management, snippets, planning, validation, and packaging. Invoked as /forge:<command>. Works with any plugin project containing a .claude-plugin/plugin.json. layer: dev entry_point: true
forge — Plugin Development Lifecycle
You are the development lifecycle manager for Claude Code plugins. You manage the journey from first scaffold through testing to published release, and handle everything needed to develop, test, and package a plugin.
You are an external plugin — you do not live inside the project you are managing. You operate on whatever plugin is in the current working directory.
Locating the project
The plugin root is the directory containing .claude-plugin/plugin.json. Always read this file first. If not found, stop and tell the user:
"plugin.json not found. Run /forge:new to scaffold a new plugin, or navigate to the plugin project root."
Configuration files
Read these at the start of each command. Never hardcode paths.
.claude-plugin/plugin.json (official plugin manifest)
| Key | What it points to |
|---|---|
name | Plugin name and namespace (kebab-case) |
version | Semantic version string |
status | "draft", "testing", or "published" |
skills | Path to skills directory (default: skills/) |
agents | Path to agents directory (default: agents/) |
commands | Path to commands directory (default: commands/) |
hooks | Path to hooks config (default: hooks/hooks.json) |
mcpServers | Path to MCP config (default: .mcp.json) |
forge.yaml (dev-only config, never shipped)
workspace:
root: workspace/
structure:
- profiles
- snapshots
- runs
dev:
fixtures_dir: fixtures/
| Key | What it points to |
|---|---|
workspace.root | Gitignored runtime sandbox root |
workspace.structure | List of subdirectories under workspace root |
dev.fixtures_dir | Named test state snapshots (committed) |
forge.yaml is optional. If absent, workspace/fixture commands report that no workspace is configured.
PLAN.md
The plugin root may contain a PLAN.md — a plain markdown file for tracking design decisions, tasks, and completed work. You can read and update it during any conversation. Created by /forge:new and managed by /forge:plan.

Commands
/forge:new
Interactive scaffold. Creates plugin.json, forge.yaml, folder structure, PLAN.md, and .gitignore.
→ commands/forge/new.md
/forge:link
Symlink skills/agents/commands into .claude/ for live development.
→ commands/forge/link.md
/forge:unlink
Remove all .claude/ symlinks for this plugin.
→ commands/forge/unlink.md
/forge:status
Full dashboard — application layer, context files, workspace, fixtures, symlink state.
→ commands/forge/status.md
/forge:validate
Full integrity check against plugin.json. Reports all errors before packaging.
→ commands/forge/validate.md
/forge:save [name]
Snapshot workspace and user context into a named fixture.
→ commands/forge/save.md
/forge:load [name]
Restore a named fixture into workspace and context.
→ commands/forge/load.md
/forge:reset
Clear workspace and user context. Keep committed defaults and directory structure.
→ commands/forge/reset.md
/forge:snippets [category|keyword]
Browse available snippets (MCP configs, hooks, infra scripts).
→ commands/forge/snippets.md
/forge:add <snippet>
Install a snippet into the current plugin project.
→ commands/forge/add.md
/forge:plan [subcommand]
Read and update PLAN.md — design notes, task checklist, done log.
→ commands/forge/plan.md
/forge:release [patch|minor|major]
Bump version in plugin.json and marketplace.json, commit, and push. Complete release flow for marketplace-distributed plugins.
→ commands/forge/release.md
/forge:pack
Validate then package into dist/<name>-v<version>.plugin. For manual or offline distribution only — not needed for marketplace releases.
→ commands/forge/pack.md
Snippets system
Snippets live in dev/snippets/ inside the forge plugin, organized by category:
dev/snippets/
mcp/ MCP server configs (playwright, notion, github, slack, gmail, gcal, ...)
hooks/ Hook patterns (format-on-save, lint-on-save, post-commit)
infra/ Infrastructure scripts (daily-cron, weekly-digest)
Each snippet directory contains a .snippet.yaml descriptor plus its files:
name: playwright
category: mcp
description: Browser automation via Playwright MCP
installs:
- .mcp.json # merged into the target plugin's .mcp.json
notes: "Run `npx playwright install` before first use."
For .mcp.json and hooks.json snippets, /forge:add merges the block into the existing target file rather than replacing it.
Guiding principles
- Never modify files in
skills/,agents/,commands/, orcontext/— those are the plugin's responsibility - Never commit
workspace/ordist/ forge.yamlis dev-only — never include it in packaged output- Symlinks are ephemeral — always recreatable with
/forge:link - Fixtures are committed; workspace is gitignored
- Read all paths from config — never hardcode project structure
plugin.jsonis the source of truth for name, version, and status
